Pre-production for new music
-
February 4, 2010
I am in the process of pre-production for 15 new songs.
I have switched to playing my Epiphone Sheraton and Gibson Les Paul for this project and have been writing/rehearsing for the past 5 months.
The vibe is a "folk-jazz trio" with bass and drums.
Hard to describe the genre - but very "Richard Wilson" with a soupcon of Django , Pentangle and Curtis Mayfield thrown in too!
Watch this space for new developments.

Music production and composition

My current approach is to write for live shows.
Just the simplicity of myself and an acoustic guitar performing the song.
Later this year , I will be recording the songs live to tape in an "old school" manner - aiming to nail the performance in a single take.
However...
In previous times , I have written the song at the same time as recording it - sometimes letting the muse of the production dictate the finished song!
My main recording set-up is an iBook G4 laptop and iMAC with Garageband software and an M-Audio firewire audio interface. Its simple and intuitive and I can get ideas down quickly.
I then transfer to a firewire drive and take to a Protools or Logic based studio- working with either Brad Cobb ,Hank Linderman or Kent Verderico.
I prefer laying out the tracks in a big room with good monitors and a subwoofer so I can hear everything and I welcome input-at this stage too.
I still work with a linear tape mentality – and try to go for the take - and not have too many tracks to comp or edit. Typically my songs are 4 to 14 tracks in size – and whoever is mixing can get a really good idea of what I am trying to say on the first listen.
I do enjoy working with loops to form a rhythmic bed from which I can build.
Typically I work with my trusty Gibson J45 and Dove acoustics which give me so much in terms of tone and vibe – the songs tend to come easier when I use those guitars.
Electrics are either my Fender Tele (US Standard) or Gibson Les Paul Special – either modelled via the Pod or mic’d via Marshall JCM2000.
Influences on me are so varied that once I start working on the idea , it can take many twists and turns and end up completely transformed from the original demo.
For me that is the adventure – not to sound like anyone else but instead- let all the genres blur.
All music is valid after all.
I like to let the muse from within, dictate the finished song with total freedom.
New live shows and CD!

April 8, 2008
I have written a set of brand new acoustic songs and have started a series of live shows and TV and radio appearances.
I plan to go into the studio in the next few months and record the new songs direct to analog 2” tape.
The new CD is scheduled for Fall 2008 release.
I am also playing regular shows at Java Rush in Lake Havasu City, Arizona– and then some dates in Los Angeles will follow.
In January I played on the Jolene Jensen Show on Havasu 45 TV , with another appearance to follow later this year.
